Welcome to process/product.
I write because I have to. When I don’t, the words wake me up just as I’m about to drift into the deep bliss of sleep—I have to pin them down before the sentences evaporate. Writing keeps me grounded: it clears the channel, helps me remember, and reminds me that I exist. Without it, I’m cranky, restless, irritable, and discontent—a worse version of myself.
For me, writing isn’t just about honing my craft—it’s spiritual hygiene. It’s taking something ephemeral, a fleeting thought, and making it tangible. Writing turns ideas into something real, whether scribbled on paper or typed out in a flurry.
This newsletter is about honoring that process.
process/product (process over product) isn’t about quick fixes or writing a novel in 30 days. It’s about daily rituals, baby steps, and the steady habits that define a creative life. This is a space for those who know that being an artist isn’t about the final product—it’s about showing up for the process, day after day.
After writing newly sober since February of 2022, I am craving a space to share my thoughts as an artist, not solely a sober person.
Here, I’ll share my process with you. What I’m reading. What I’m watching. The random thoughts I jot down that may mean everything—or nothing at all. Sometimes it’ll be a rant about the challenges of being a self-employed artist under capitalism (poor me!), and other times it’ll be musings on what it means to live a creative life in this messy, modern world.
I’ve led eight cohorts through Julia Cameron’s The Artist’s Way since 2020, and I’m gearing up for my ninth round in January. This work has taught me that the creative journey isn’t linear or glamorous. It’s like a butterfly gestating in its chrysalis: messy, gooey, and seemingly aimless at times. But out of that slop comes transformation.
We are all artists. Life is our primary medium. Throwing out your mismatched socks, repotting your dying houseplant, buying that loud throw pillow—every choice you make shapes your art. The process is what matters.
This newsletter is an invitation to cultivate your own creative rituals alongside me. Together, let’s make a work of living art out of our lives.
